Aim of the program

The program aims to provide an opportunity for early-career and mid-career researchers to seek advice on developing strengths and overcoming weaknesses, and for mid-career and senior researchers to share valuable knowledge and give back to the professional community as a subject matter expert and leader, to nurture health economics talent and develop future leaders.

How to apply as a mentee

The application period for the annual 1 on 1 mentoring program typically opens on February 1. Any inquiries regarding the application process can be sent to mentoring@ahes.org.au.

How to apply as a mentor

If you are interested in participating as an AHES mentor, please look out for our mentor call-out via AHES email to express your interest and also please provide details such as your title, name, current position and affiliation. Any enquiries about the mentoring process can be sent to mentoring@ahes.org.au.

How will the mentoring take place?
  • Commitment to the program is expected for 6 months.
  • Catch-up meetings between the mentors and mentees are expected approximately every 4-6 weeks.
  • The frequency, session duration, content, venue and format (in person or online) of the mentoring sessions should be agreed between the mentor and the mentee.
Roles and Responsibilities

Mentorship activities are negotiated directly between the mentee and mentor. Mentees are responsible for making arrangements to meet their mentors. Following matching, mentees are advised to prepare a plan for the mentorship activities to be discussed with the mentor. The focus of the relationship is the mentee’s goals, but both parties need to follow through on actions or commitments and both need to respect each other’s time.

Mentoring resources

Some examples on how to foster successful mentorship and plan sessions are provided here, including mentee experience and tips, and techniques for coaching and mentoring.

The matching process

The matching aims to ensure a diverse selection of mentees/mentors from different Australian universities/research institutes. Subject to the availability of mentors, the AHES mentoring committee will match participants based on areas of interest, work environment and experience.

Program feedback

At the end of the 6 months, mentors and mentees will be prompted to provide feedback on the mentoring experience with a structured questionnaire, and any suggestions for the AHES to consider to improve the program.

Call for Mentors

The call-out for mentors occurs at the beginning of each year. Please look out for the AHES emails for expressions of interest. There are no restrictions to be a mentor, except having completed a PhD or have equivalent experience, and you can express your interest for one or more of the schemes.

After we receive our expression of interest from mentees, we will match mentors to the appropriate scheme/mentee. We will endeavour to find a role for all mentors that express an interest, however this is dependent on the number of mentees that are included in the program.

If you have any questions, please contact the AHES Mentoring Committee: mentoring@ahes.org.au.
